Vandusen Botanical Gardens

The new Vandusen Visitor’s Centre in Vancouver British Columbia is a ground-breaking architectural marvel. From a bird’s eye view the building resembles an Orchid, a design inspired by Cornelia Oberlander – landscape architect.

The building was designed to meet The Living Building Challenge requirements for sustainable buildings and use grey and black water recycled on site.

Design

The new Vandusen Visitors was a joint design between Busby, Perkins + Will Architects, Cornelia Oberlander and Sharp and Diamond Landscape Architects. Architek provided design-assist and installation supervision for the complex green roof systems.

Installation

Vandusen had three distinct green roof sections: The Landbridge which is a relatively flat semi-intensive area, The Petals where Architek employed a gentle slope engineered green roof system with shear barriers and The Oculus – a steep slope area in the center which required Architek to employ custom shear barrier and soil erosion design.

Maintenance

The Vancouver Parks Board is currently maintaining the Vandusen Visitor’s Centre green roofs.
