The Local

The Local project in North Vancouver on 17th Avenue is the redevelopment of the existing Loblaws grocery store and parking lot into a large-scale residential condominium tower and grocery store with underground parking.
The new development by Anthem Properties features a large 36,000 sq. ft. green roof which has now morphed into a spectacular mountain meadow.

Design

Architek advised the landscape architect on this larger extensive green roof project over a big box grocery store. As the green roof is overlooked by a large condominium tower, a distinct design using two contrasting sedum tile colors was used.

Installation

Architek collaborated with the landscape contractor for the installation of this project. After the green roof was successfully completed, a contractor mistakenly drilled numerous holes into the waterproofing membrane requiring Architek’s crew to come back on a number of occasions to remove the green roof system for roof repairs and replace the green roof again afterwards. You would never realize that happened looking at the green roof now.

Maintenance

We has been maintaining the green roof on this project for a number of years now. This green roof is particularly special as over the years the seum base has been maintained, yet new species like mountain Lupins have been introduced by the local birds and it has turned into a lush mountain meadow.

Our Vancouver offices are located on the unceded and ancestral territory of the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ and Swx̱wú7mesh speaking peoples, the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Swx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations, and has been stewarded by them since time immemorial.

Vancouver is located on territory that was never ceded, or given up to the Crown by the Musqueam, Squamish, or Tsleil-Waututh peoples. The term unceded acknowledges the dispossession of the land and the inherent rights that Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh hold to the territory. The term serves as a reminder that Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh have never left their territories and will always retain their jurisdiction and relationships with the territory.
